Beating Around the BushIs it just me or is this whole business with John Roberts a little...tiresome? It feels like a circus. Just taking note of what is being said on CNN and in the Washington Post has made me uneasy. I realize that people accuse the media of being liberal, so I am taking everything with a grain of salt. Regardless of my own beliefs, I don't trust reports that could possibly be biased either way. I am going to listen to some of the video feeds they have available on the web later on tonight so I can consider myself a better informed constituent, and form my own opinions about this man. I often find myself overwhelmed by the amount of information available. Also, I feel like there is probably so much to every political issue (that as regular ol' people we don't know about) that it would be impossible to be 100% informed. I mean, I look at the politics that take place in my work office and I just think-what a giant mess this would be on a large scale.
Either way, I hear that he is beating around the bush and not answering questions about his opinions on major issues. And people think that the Democrats are overreacting? Of course they are! (Even the Republicans have said they are unclear on where he stands.) This man, being that he is so young (relative to past nominees), has the potential to be on the Supreme Court for 35-40 years! The American people have the right to know where he stands on any and every issue we so choose to question him about! I have to agree with Senator Charles E. Schumer (the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Courts) when he said, "questioning judicial nominees is a duty and not a privilege," and "“I have long believed that federal court candidates – who serve for life – should explain their judicial philosophy and their method of legal reasoning. They should be prepared to explain their views of the Constitution... and a host of other issues relevant to that lifetime post.”
See this website for the list of questions he wishes to be addressed. In reading the transcript of the first hearing, I see that it is stated that there are not specific rules about what questions may and may not be asked (or answered for that matter). I think it is ridiculus to suggest that any political topic should be disallowed.
Isn't that the point?!?! It makes me nervous that the Senate has not been allowed full access to his records. What are they trying to hide? People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing. From what I have gathered about him, he is notorious for being opposed to issues that are very important to women's rights and civil rights in general. Grrr.
Before John Roberts is elected to be the most powerful judge in the United States, I would like to be reassured that he will protect my individual rights and freedoms as a female and as an American citizen in general. Is that so much to ask?
Sorry, was this post too serious? Okay, to quote the mayor in
The Nightmare Before Christmas:
I'm only an elected official here, I can't make decisions by myself!
